Tourism

Mundaring town is only a 40 min car journey from the CBD of Perth and only 10 mins from Midland. The Shire of Mundaring is a melting pot of wineries, world class restaurants, boutique accommodation all set against a background steeped in a rich history.

Mundaring Weir, considered one of the World's greatest engineering projects, is the start of a water pipeline that distributes water to agricultural towns in the wheatbelt area. The Mundaring Weir is one of the marvels of Western Australian engineering and the man responsible was Mr Charles Yelverton O'Connor. Originally from Ireland, O'Connor was also heavily involved in the establishment of Fremantle harbour and the State's railways.

O'Connor initiated plans for the Mundaring Weir in 1895 but after some controversy, it was completed in 1903 and the water scheme changed central Western Australia forever. Today, the Mundaring Weir remains a popular picnic spot. The No 1 Pumping Station has been transformed into the CYO'Connor Museum in honour of the mastermind behind early engineering in Western Australia.

Also the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail stretches some 59kms through the shire and the Shire is also the starting point of the famous Munda Biddi Bike Trail.

If you are a foodie, then the Shire is home to many award winning restaurants and wineries all set in beautiful and unique backgrounds. You can dine alfresco during summer or enjoy the atmosphere of a cosy fire in winter.

If you wish to dine at the restaurant of Truffle festival creator, Alain Fabregues, then visit his multi award winning restaurant The Loose Box located on the Great Eastern Highway.  This charming restaurant has been beautifully reconstructed from the shell of an authentic Federation home and is truly an experience to savour for all food lovers! For details please visit www.loosebox.com.au

Mundaring and the surrounding Perth Hills is also home to well known artists and craftspeople. You are able to visit studios and galleries to see and purchase some of the wonderful pieces created.

You can also visit the Mundaring Arts Centre (MAC), a not for profit community based organisation which helps the local broader community to participate in, and enjoy arts projects and activities. The Centre also runs a varied, ongoing program of exhibitions by emerging and leading West Australian artists in the main Gallery. For more information please visit  www.mundaringartscentre.com

On the second Sunday of each month join us in Mundaring for the markets. Indoor and outdoor venues feature a great variety of stalls featuring hand-crafted goods and quality creative art products, locally grown fresh produce and plants, home made food stuffs and many other delights that will take your fancy.

With over a third of the Shire being State Forest, the flora and fauna native to this area creates an idyllic location to enjoy walking trails, cycle tracks and the wildflowers.

Lake Leschenaultia is a stretch of clean clear water specially set aside by Mundaring Shire for leisure activities. Canoeing, swimming, cycling, walking, bird watching and barbecues can all be enjoyed in this bushland park covering some 168 hectares. Originally known as Chidlows Well, the Lake was built in 1897 as a dam by the Western Australian Government Railway to replenish the steam engines travelling to Northam, York and beyond.

A tremendous variety of native trees including Marri and Wandoo and wildflowers can be seen together with an abundance of bird life including ducks, geese, herons and swamp hens. Kangaroos, possums, bandicoots and echidnas roam the surrounding bush.
